Altered Audio Interview – “From Hobby to Habit to Handbook”

Steve phillips

There’s something surreal about looking back on twenty years of podcasting. You start to realize that what began as a hobby — a handful of friends recording conversations that sometimes went nowhere and everywhere at once — became something that outlasted entire platforms, networks, and trends.

Episode 350 of GeekCast Radio wasn’t just another number in the feed. It marked two decades of chasing stories, voices, and connection — and, for me, the release of something deeply personal: my first book, Altered Audio: Podcasting Demystified.

When Mike flipped the script and interviewed me for this one, it didn’t feel like promotion. It felt like therapy. We talked about those early days when we were recording on cheap mics that buzzed if someone even looked at them funny, editing for hours just to make something listenable. We didn’t have blueprints or sponsors — just passion, caffeine, and stubborn optimism.

That’s why I wrote Altered Audio. It’s not a “how to get rich podcasting” book. It’s about why people start, why they stop, and how to keep going when no one’s listening but you. It’s for the creator who knows what burnout feels like but hits “record” anyway.

Podcasting, for me, was never about chasing numbers. It was about preserving that spark of genuine conversation — the thing algorithms can’t fake.🎧 Hear the full story and how Altered Audio came to life:
