National Mario Day!

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. Here in 2025 it’s the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros!!! The game was released September 13, 1985!! What times we live in folks, where we have so many geeky things to be thankful for that have been released over time. 40 years…. Mario and the gang still look as young as they were back then! With my 69th entry, back in 2019 I talked about National Mario Day! This time around we return to that topic, but with a twist! So head back in time to 2019 to see my original write up, and now for the twist!

My Top 10 FAVORITE MARIO GAMES THAT I’VE PLAYED!:

I am using LONGPLAY ARCHIVE! on YouTube to remind myself of some of these games, and some I do not remember at all.

I wasn’t even sure IF I had played 10 Mario games in my lifetime. As the time has gone on… my Nintendo gameplay has faded. I have three honorable mentions… I played these games, but had to cut them from the list.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

MARIO PAINT (1992)! – You needed the SNES mouse for this I think….. The YouTube channel NintendoComplete has a video for the game. You can watch that HERE! I kinda loved the idea of this as a 12 year old in 1992, plus purple accented mouse for SNES! But looking back on it… I’ve always known not to be an artist. I can’t draw or paint to save my life. Which is why this is only getting an honorable mention!

SUPER MARIO WORLD 2: YOSHI’S ISLAND! (1995) – You can watch the LPA Vid HERE! Just no. I never liked this game. I tried playing it several times and it was just never for me. They took the sidekick and game him his own game…. Nahhhh didn’t work for me in this case.

DR. MARIO! (1990) – Watch the NES LPA vid right HERE! Tetris wannabe! <—- That has always been my first thought when I hear anyone mention this game! When I did play it…. all I thought was where were the L blocks or the LIIIIIINE pieces!! Shout Out To TETRIS GOD!!!

THE TOP 10:

10: SUPER MARIO LAND 2: 6 GOLDEN COINS! (1992) – Watch LPA’s Vid HERE! As I was watching this…. I do not ever remember playing this, but I know I had it, and I know I played it. That’s the only reason why it goes at number 10 for me.

09: SUPER MARIO LAND! (1989) – Watch LPA’s Vid HERE! I do remember playing this one, however it wasn’t for very long. As I was watching the playthrough video…. I think I only ever played the first two levels…. So that’s why the GameBoy games of early Mario days are at the numbers that they are at.

08: SUPER MARIO KART! (1992) – The Race is on! You can watch the LPA’s Vid of the game HERE! I loved SMK! Although I was never very good at it. I enjoyed the gameplay, the music, and how it felt like Super Mario World, but on a race track with race cars!

07: SUPER SMASH BROS.! (1999) – The FIGHT is on! Mario Versus Luigi, Link Vs The Princess, Link Vs Yoshi Team, and sooo many more!! Because this was an N64 title and the N64 vcontroller was weird as hell for m… I only played this a few times.

06: SUPER MARIO ALL STARS! (1993) – BRIGHT SHINY AND NEW! Yet still classic? You can watch the LPA’s vid of the game HERE! I remember my favorite thing about this was playing SMB3 with SNES graphics. The updated music was nice too. Getting to play the “lost levels” was fun, but very challenging as well. At least for me anyways.

05: SUPER MARIO BROS. 2! (1988) – This is the US and EU version as that’s what I played as a kid! You can watch the LPA’s vid right HERE! This game was WEIRD!!! But I enjoyed it for what it was! Always play as the Princess folks!!! She was the best player in this game! I never finished the game, but I never really had ambition to at the time. And now I’m perfectly fine watching others do it.

04: SUPER MARIO BROS.! (1985) – The Original…. the king maker…. the one that started it all!! You can watch LPA’s vid right HERE! There is so much to be said about this game, that I can’t fit it all in this little blurb. And you might be saying to yourself… then why is it at number 4? Well whilst I still love it, what came after it had a bigger effect on me.

03: SUPER MARIO RUN! (2017 Android Version) – I still play this now. Not as much as when it first debuted, but every now and then, when I get a hankering to play some Mario… SMR is my game. The auto running makes everything much smoother. While I do have a SNES classic, and I can, and do play the other games, a quick round of Mario on my phone just scratches the itch sometimes! Plus the fun of this for me is how fast I can get the coins in the game. There are three color types of coins, and if you get them all for each level you get rewarded! Love that! Plus there’s a Remix 10 level thing that they have in the game… I’ve done a video on that… Actually I have four SMR vids, you can see them all HERE!

02: SUPER MARIO BROS. 3! (1988) – SUPAH LEAF! RACOON MARIO!!! You can watch the LPA’s vid right HERE! This was, is, and forever will be my first love of a Mario game! And I say this here and now, and then I look at my number 1 choice and you’ll probably ask me why this isn’t number 1? Well it’s very simple…. This is what got me excited to play a Super Mario game again! Also at that time what got me excited for Mario was the cartoon series The Adventures of SMB3!!! Here’s the INTRO to the cartoon!!

01: SUPER MARIO WORLD! (1992) – How could this NOT be my #1? This was the game that came with THE SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM in 1992! You can watch LPA’s vid right HERE!!! This was MY TRUE Mario game….. the game I sunk endless hours into!!! The SNES was my first ever Nintendo system I owned! It was my Christmas Present in 1992, and all throughout Christmas into New Years from 1992 through 1993… I was playing Super Mario World! December 25, 1992 was a Friday!!!! That meant I could play ALL NIGHT into December 26, 1992!!! I remember I had to have our old Zenith TV turned almost all the way down!!! It was 1am Eastern time on that Saturday I was still wide awake, and playing SMW! I was stuck on Vanilla Dome 3 and I thought the dinos that popped up outta the lava would wake my Mom up! You can see what I mean in this vid HERE! So yeah Super Mario World is my #1!!!!!

I’m not sure if I’ll do anything for Mario Day in 2026, but since this was the 40th anniversary… I hadta write this!
