Hello Comic Book Fans it is I, TFG1Mike… You Are Now reading TFG1MIKE 365! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024. In my 100th entry of 2024, it’s April 9, 2024, and I’m gonna be writing about The Pull Bag again! This time I’ll be talking about several of my favorite episodes we’ve done in the last 11 years! The above image is made by Steve/Megatron and my animated character made by Neil Purcell… This was one of The Pull Bag’s earliest banner arts! Still love it to this day!
So WHY is this blog entry’s title ONE in FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY Episodes you might ask? Well it’s because, hopefully by now the 550th episode is online. After that the reason is that EVERYONE has THEIR OWN FIRST episode of whatever podcast they are listening to. For me I always start at the very beginning of any podcast no matter how old or young it is. I want to see where the show and the hosts started, and see how everything evolves over time.
First up is the Interview with Kyle Higgins from 2013, you can listen to that HERE! It was awesome chatting with Kyle, and I’ve been following him as a creator ever since. I’d love to catch up with him one of these days! He’s written so much stuff that I’ve really enjoyed and that we’ve covered here at The GCRN!
These were the FIRST two featured banners that Steve/Megatron came up with.
They were based on the original title of the podcast at the time, which it was not The Pull Bag! The Original title was The Pull List! (However there was already a podcast with that title!) So Mike “Boothninja” Powers gave me The Pull Bag title! (THANKS MIKE!!!!)
Also THANK YOU TO STEVE/MEGATRON FOR ALL THE HARD WORK OVER THE YEARS AND SO MUCH MORE!
Here’s GCR EP 297: The Podcast Name Game with myself (TFG1Mike) and Steve/Megatron! Where we talk about the naming of podcasts, and more!
EVERY. ONE. OF. THE. TPB ORIGINS. episodes have also been my favorite! You can get all of those podcasts right HERE! The format started with 25 questions, then it went to 30 questions, and I’ve been doing that ever since 2019 when we changed it to 30 instead of 25. I just felt that 30 was a better rounded conversation, and it lets me ask my guests more about their comic reading habits.
Year 1 of TPB went from March 6, 2013 through March 6, 2014. In that year’s time we released 75 episodes! TPB Year 1 includes our Superior Spider-Man, the Bat Books, Transformers, Masters Of The Universe coverage, and soooo much more. We even had a few spotlight type episodes with MARVEL THEN, MARVEL NOW! And DC’s The New 52, Then and Now! Those were awesome conversations!!! I both remembered and forgot how many other things we covered in Year 1! So much Transformers and TMNT!!! We were all in on DC, Marvel, and IDW!
Year 2 of TPB went from March 6, 2014 through March 6, 2015. In that year’s time we released 93 episodes! Year 2 started with THE BAT BOOKS ZERO! That was Episode 059.5, and shortly after that I think we stopped doing the point five episode numbering. Within Year 2 we did the first #MARVELOUSMARCH! This was supposed to be an annual thing, but it never really stuck. From Spider and Iron Man, to Wolverine, Captain America, and The Punisher… That first MARVELOUS MARCH was an awesome time! So awesome in fact we came back in 2015 for another round, but I’ll be talking about that in the Year 3 section! Also in Year 2 we had some great origins in comic reading stories! We are all different people, and we all like different things. That’s why I LOVE The Origins series we’ve created here at The GCRN. It gives us a chance to get stories from every fan that we can! We got to interview (now former Turtle Editor in Chief) Bobby Curnow from IDW. We talked all kinds of TMNT stuff and more! I don’t remember if this was the first or not, but might have launched TPB Comictaries with TMNT (1990)! It was a fun time going outside of the comic books themselves and onto the big screen!
Year 3 of TPB went from March 6, 2015 through March 6, 2016. In that year’s time we released 74 episodes! Part of that was MARVELOUS MARCH 2015! Where we covered more modern Marvel at the time, which included retro Transformers too! The funny thing is that I have not really kept up on my promises of more MARVELOUS MARCHES. I think 2014 and 2015 were the only ones we’ve ever done. Sure we’ve covered Marvel books, just not in a monthly spotlight. Year 3 also included Episode 100 of the podcast. In that episode I had us reading NEW #1 issues at the time! You can listen to that right HERE! We covered Silk, Spider-Gwen, Descender, The Dying and the Dead, and Batman Arkham Knight! A new segment in 2015 was “PROFILING PREVIEWS” I got the idea for this from Michael David Sims of Earth-2.net! He used to do this all the time, we only ever did it four times in 2015, here’s the MARCH 2015 episode! Year 3 also marked the beginning of our BATMAN BEYOND Coverage! JT and I started with 10,000 Clowns!! We’ve been going strong almost 10 years on that series! You can catch it all right HERE! And with that let’s move onto Year 4! But wait… there’s more!! I forgot that we interviewed John Barber, Kelly Thompson, Thom Zahler! and Ryan Ferrier. (Whatever happened to him?) I love doing interviews and those four were all amazing. OK here we go Year 4!
Year 4 of TPB went from March 6, 2016 through March 6, 2017. In that year’s time we released 41 episodes! Well this was a short year for the podcast, and I don’t quite remember why. It would have been a year since my Mom had died at the time, as she passed in May of 2015… However 41 episodes is a good year in my mind. Year 4 was all about adding MORE! And kicking it off we went down to PonyVille! Yup Episode 132 was MLP: Friendship Is Magic Volumes 1 and 2! Which you can listen to right HERE! Episode 133 was My Little Pony Friends Forever Volumes 1 and 2, which you can listen to right HERE! I knew we had done some pony coverage, but didn’t realize it was in Year 4!! We also watched Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything in the summer of this year, which you can hear right HERE! We also continued the TPB Comictaries with TMNT II: The Secret Of The Ooze! It’s these little jaunts outside of the books that make me feel TPB is different than most other comic book podcasts!
Year 5 of TPB went from March 6, 2017 through March 6, 2018. In that year’s time we released 42 episodes! In year 5 we did so much, even though the episode count was kinda low. With Episode 140 we celebrated TPB’s 5 year anniversary by asking everyone what do comics mean to you? You can check that out right HERE! That was a super fun episode, and we might have to revisit it. Even though it started in 2016, I have to mention our i HATE FAIRYLAND coverage! That was a splat in the hat all right, but I loved reading that comic, and covering it on the show with The Comic Concierge Dan Clark! As year 5 marched on, we went to the future with the BATMAN BEYOND coverage. JT From Saskatoon and I have had a Schway time talking all things Bat Beyond!!! Also in 2017 we had a few interviews! Pat Shand and Thom Zahler stopped by for a new appearance on the show. Also in 2017 we did a Zenescope Robyn Hood Month, which you can listen to that right HERE! And Then…. NO AND THEN….. ANNNND THEN…..!!!!!!! THE PULL BAG EPISODE 300!!!! OptimusSolo joined me as we went back in time! Great Scott, That was heavy as we covered all the Back To The Future comics from IDW!!
Year 6 of TPB went from March 6, 2018 through March 6, 2019. In that year’s time we released 41 episodes! Year 6 what a ride! I have NO Idear what the hell was goin’ on in March of 2018, but we didn’t even celebrate the podcast’s anniversary!!!! Episodes went from February 21st with EP 301 to April 18th with EP 302! That is not like me to pass up any anniversary celebration Strange!!! But that’s what happened! With Year 6 in full swing, we hit EP 305: Hadrian’s Wall The Comic Concierge Dan Clark joined me for this, and I still love that series from Kyle Higgins!!! I did the first ever “LIVE” in person thing for the podcast. (That was EP 306!) That year I was live at Jay’s Comics in Grayslake, IL! After all that Eduardo M. Freyre joined me to talk Doctor Who and Transformers, and then I flew solo…. (Something I hardly to almost never do anymore!) to talk about the MMPR FCBD issue from 2018!
JT From Saskatoon and I hit up the 10th Anniversary issues from Zenescope that year in EP 310! That was fun, I need to get back into reading the Zenescope books! Year 6 also saw us beginning the Boom! Studios WWE Comics!!! Again something I need to get back to reading! Ryan “The UnEvenFlow” Merkley joined me for that coverage!!! These days Ryan is still in TPB here and there, but go check out his new thang… THE UPNERD Podcast Network! It’s great listening!!! In EP 313 Steve and I covered DC Comics’ Nightwing: The New Order! I think this was Kyle Higgins’s first time writing Nightwing, since the New 52 series ended. I loved New Order!!! It was awesome, I think I need to dig that out of the digital bin, and re read it for fun! Dan, DJ Valentine and I jumped into Sean Gordon Murphy’s White Knight Universe in EP 331 and 332!! Gotta say this here and now SGM’s Batman Universe is my favorite out of all the Bruce Wayne/Batman Comics I’ve read in the last 11 years! In EP 334 Ryan joined me as I visited Amazing Fantasy #15 for the first time EVER! In EP 340 Aimee aka The LadyWreck joined me to wrap up the IDW Jem coverage! As Year 6 comes to a close there was Boom! Studios Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon in EP 335, Steve joined me for that, and thus began TPB’s Power Rangers Coverage! EP 337 (In A Row!) was the 13 Years of IDW celebration with Ryan taking the lead along with LadyWreck, and Jenevieve Frank!! I think this is THE ONLY episode of The Pull Bag that I’m not in charge during the recording! Yes I added a clip of myself, and Steve did the intro stuff, but this was Ryan Aimee’s and Jenevieve’s episode to shine! (Not that that don’t shine any other time!) In EP 345.5 I began The Way Of The Comic Book series on the podcast. At the time in April of 2019 Pat Shand joined me to talk about the comic book industry! (Little did we know just over a year later… in 2020 the comic book industry would face many hardships during the pandemic!) For this episode I just wanted to have a chill conversation about comics in general. Pat Shand brought all his experience working in comics, and I still love this episode to this day. This is also one of the few .5 episodes TPB has done. We stopped that after awhile, because every episode, every topic can just be a regular numbered episode! Year 6 is a powerful punch even though it only has 41 episodes in it. There was a lot here that I went back to, in order to write this up. Year 6 is at it’s dusk point, and we will witness the dawn of Year 7!
Year 7 of TPB went from March 6, 2019 through March 6, 2020. In that year’s time we released 41 podcast episodes, the same as Year 6! But hold yer horses ya whippersnappers! Because in year 7 we did a lot of new comic series reviews! AND we had the 350th EPISODE!!! Ryan and I covered Paul Dini’s Dark Night: A True Batman Story! Such a powerfully done story, and I loved that I could learn more about Paul Dini through comics! EP 354 was that’s right it was a Top 10 List! I think, but I’m not 100% on this, but I think this was the first EVER Top 10 on TPB! Ryan and Steve joined me as we each counted down our favorite Batman Characters! That was a blast! Ryan and JT joined me in EP 355.5 which was Tony Stark: Iron Man V1! Dan Slott took on Spider-Man, and now he was gonna take on Iron Man! Honestly I wanted to see how Mr. Slott would write an Iron Man story, after all the Spidey stuff of his we covered on the podcast! I remember really enjoying Tony Stark: Iron Man! Year 7 also had another “FIRST” moment, we finally covered a Superman story! It was the NEW (at the time) DC Black Label Superman Year One #1! This was EP 359 of the podcast, and this series would go down in TPB’s history of me NOT WANTING TO FINISH IT! Frank Freakin’ Miller mannnnn…. I guess I shoulda known better. Because I thought this was gonna be a true Clark without Bruce book. The DC Black Label stuff was three issue miniseries, and because Mr. Miller is who he is, and what he has achieved in his career with Batman… I wanted to see how he would tackle Superman. Joe Reed and I covered two outta the three books. When I read the solicit for the third issue, yup you guessed it freakin’ Batman was gonna show up! ARRGGHHHH! EP 376.5 was Superman Year One #2. I guess all these years later, I should finish what I started right? Or am I correct in not wanting to do so? I remember the first two issues really were Clark/Superman’s origin, and I did LOVE the way Mr. Miller was telling the story. However knowing Bats and Diana were gonna show up in the final issue, it just rubbed me the wrong way. I really loved the story of Supes making it on his own. I’m not naïve though, I know the DC “Trinity” will join forces at some point, but when you only have three issues to tell an origin story of your first EVER LEAD LEGACY character… Don’t bog it down with throwing other big league legacy characters into the story. Maybe I just need to SHUTUP, take my medicine, and read the dam thing. After all I would never want to be told, “HEY MORON, you can’t judge something you’ve never seen/heard etc etc…. OK FINE! (I’ll have Joe and I finish it!) We also returned to the DC and IDW crossovers with Batman/TMNT II!! After that there’s wayyy more in Year 7, but we must move on…!!
Year 8 of TPB went from March 6, 2020 through March 6, 2021. In that year’s time we released 46 podcast episodes! In year 8 I REVAMPED The TPB Origins In Comic Reading series! I took it from 25 questions to 30 questions. And just adding those 5 questions, I feel really solidified the format! My first test subject for the new format was Jeremy Fein! You can listen to EP 381 right HERE! Ok so year eight and everything’s great right? Well… We did only add in 5 more episodes from the previous two years. But yeah…. there’s great stuff in year eight! Steve and I updated our Origins in Comic Reading stories! (They pretty much are the same as we did them in Ep 003 wayyy back in the day( However I think that there’s new material here to. Judge for yourself by listening to EP 384 right HERE! There were lots of origins episodes in 2020, and I figured the episode count would go down, due to the pandemic, but it didn’t. HELL EVERYONE WAS AT HOME!!! So really 20/20 should have been our largest year yet…. IF ONLY I could have done 100 episodes in 20/20, but that’s all in hindsight now!! One of my most favorite episodes that we did was EP 385, which was the second DC Black Label series I tried. This time it was the HARLEEN series, and it was a huge success with Jeremy Fein, Edward, and Kendra Hale! The Hales would go on to join me in our DC Batwing Volumes 4 and 5 coverage, which was when Luke Fox became Batwing. I had not read the series before hand. So this really was a jumping on point for me. I always loved when Edward, Kendra, and I would record! Steve and I UNLEASHED THE BEASTS with IDW’s 17 issue Beast Wars series! Then Mikey O’Sullivan from MoonBase2 joined me to cover my old radio DJ pal’s comic which was Carter Mann’s Immortal Orphans! That was a really cool creator own thing. I dug it, plus it was great to have me being the perspective of knowing Carter’s humor, and Mikey going in constructed cold! We are now at the 400th Episode!!! Steve and Dan joined me tyo talk about the Comic Book History of Comics! That just blew my mind!!! And now it’s time for Year 9!!
Year 9 of TPB went from March 6, 2021 through March 6, 2022. In that year’s time we released 56 podcast episodes and we were feelin’ strangely fine! The first major thing in Year 9 was that Steve and I interviewed Comic Artist Josh Burcham!! Josh’s work is amazing! Speaking of things that are amazing… On March 27, 2021 we started discussing Image Comics’ brand new series and universe starting with Radiant Black! You can listen to all those episodes right HERE! The Radiant Black series has everything in it, from amazing writing by Kyle Higgins, to the art by Marcelo Costa, the letters by Becca Carey, and so much more! It’s a book everyone should be reading. Edward and Kendra Hale joined me again in EP 404: Comics Not Found! So it’s a 404 Error joke here. I had this idea since The Pull Bag is a COMIC BOOK REVIEW AND DISCUSSION SHOW…. why not flip the script upside down like Spider-Man hangs out! The idea for this 2 hour and 11 minute episode was that the three of us start talking comics, but someone brings up something that derails the comics train, and we talk about anything other than comics! However at the end we had to tie it back into comics, in order to get the train back on track!
Three Years later we continued the MurphyVerse comics with Edward and Kendra Hale joining me on EP 410: Batman: Curse Of The White Knight! The Hales and I spent over three hours discussing this second chapter in the White Knight Universe, and it was an amazing conversation. I love those conversations that start, and then they end up going all night. Whether its friends, family, or even strangers. (YES KIDS DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS!!!!) But what I mean is those people that are strangers to you at first, but y’all become fast friends after a three hour discussion, whether it’s being recorded or not. THAT’S the friendship Ed and Kendra showed me! Dan returned to TPB in EP 411: I’m Down, I’ve Got The Comics 411! The title for this episode was inspired by Larry Miller’s performance in 10 Things I Hate About You! Dan and I went over how to start reading comics at any age, and at any time. We even created a Top 10 Comics Reading Tips List! Then there was the return to the DC and IDW Crossover smash hit with BATMAN/TMNT! That’s right in 2021 Joe and I finally finished the series with EP 413: Batman-TMNT III!!! That trilogy of stories was Battastic Turtle Mania Fun!!! Year 9 really was all about TRANSFORMERS, TMNT, Radiant Black!, and so much more! Stuff like Ryan Drost’s STEALTH HAMMER #1!, EP 427: Origins in Comic Reading with Brad and Lisa from The Comic Books Couples Counselling!!! That was such a good conversation, everyone really should go check out CBCC, and everything that they have covered! We did our FIRST EVER Comic Book Television series in this year! It was So You Wanna Be A Hawkeye! Those were discussions I’d never thought I’d have on the show… However we had them, and they were amazing. We also had a HUGE CHANGE with the EPISODE NUMBERING this year!!! This put us on the right path. NUMB3RS MATT3R y’all!!! So Episode titles from this point forward will look like this:
455 – Origins In Comic Reading With Bethany Kesler!
There will not be any more point 5 episodes… Every Comic or topic gets a regularly numbered episode. I think EP 456.5 was the last point 5 episode we did! NOPE! 457.5 was the last one. We kinda had a crossover with All Things Transformers, but not really… I took Steve on a journey back to my elementary school library days as we talked about TRANSFORMERS: Storybooks – Wheelie The Wild Boy Of Quintesson!! Which that title really say Quintessa not Quintesson, but it is what it is!! We ended year 9 on a down note as AMAZON DESTROYED COMIXOLOGY!! I feel like Dante Hicks over here… That’s all amazon is a series of down endings! It was still a wonderful conversation, and that is the key here. As long as I have great, stupendous, amazing, spectacular conversations inside The Pull Bag, and my guests and/or co-hosts also leave the recording feeling great… I’ve done my job as a podcaster! Let’s head into YEAR 10: What Then…?
Year 10 of TPB went from March 6, 2022 through March 6, 2023. In that year’s time we released 37 podcast episodes! In year 10 we continued the POWER RANGERS discussions as we were up to Volume 11: Necessary Evil Part 1, which you can listen to right HERE! Jesse Ras and I need to get back into this series, even though they ended it with Volume 14 a few months afterwards. We did the third COMICTARY on EP 475: TPB Comictaries – TMNT III! Joe and I had a blast launching this miniseries within the podcast! There will be more COMICTARIES in the future! The BATMAN BEYOND coverage continued as we ended our reading of Dan Jurgens’s run! We had Volume 7: First Flight, and Volume 8: The Eradication Agenda!
After that there was EP 488: TRANSFORMERS/BACK TO THE FUTURE!! That one was a bit strange, but a fun read! Thanks go out to Steve/Megatron as always, and remember WHEN THIS BABY HITS 88MPH YOU’RE GONNA SEE SOME SERIOUS SHIT! Also in Year 10, as you can see the numbers creeping ever so close to 500.. We have EP 490: The Kill Lock! Writing and art done by the series creator Livio Ramondelli!!!! HaHee Prime joined me for this new coverage, and later we will return with another Kill Lock series. What I remember about this first collected edition is that it had amazing art (as always)… But it was a wholly original idea. Yes Livio put references and things in the backgrounds sometimes. However the story itself, I’m pretty sure it blew HaHee Prime and I away!! We are two away from five hundred!! EP 498: IDW Publishing’s Star Trek #1 (2022)!!! Steve and I finally got to the Star Trek stuff!!! (There will be more in the future here on TPB!!! As well as on the rebranded Future Imperfect, as we are now on an Altered Trek!! But the Star Trek books from IDW are great!! In another “OFF THE WALL IDEA!!” I invited Bethany Kesler on to discuss her UnPopular Comic and MCU Opinions in EP 499!!
DRAMATIC PAUSE………!!!
THE 500TH EPISODE!!!!!! First let me talk about this milestone, because I never thought nor did I have any ambition to get The Pull Bag here. Secondly, I’ve had this planned since we hit episode 300… Because there was only one person who could be on the 500th episode… The one person who gave me all the podcasting advice through emails in the beginning. While it was Steve/Megatron that reached out to me, and we are and have been best friends for 16 YEARS…. One of the first podcasts I listened to in 2007 was Michael David Sims and James Deaux’s World’s Finest Podcast. I would listen to WFP all the time, and I would even re-listen to some episodes! Before I talk about Mike, and everything his done in his podcasting career, I wanna point you in the direction of my Road To 500 Episodes entry in the 365 Series! I detailed my plan to get from EP 393 to EP 500. You can read that right HERE! OK OK no more delay… I have been wanting to Mike on a podcast since I launched The TFG1 Podcast back in 2008. And as I write these words… I just realized we released EP 500 on 11-30-22, the day Kevin Conroy died. ARGGGGGHH! And the episode post itself does not have any dedication to the memory of Mr. Conroy. However I am gonna say this here that Michael David Sims’s Origins in Comic Reading is now dedicated to the memory of Kevin Conroy. So after nearly 15 YEARS of asking, I finally got to podcast with the person that I credit the most for getting me to be a podcaster! What a show that was, just listen to it and let me know what you think! As Year 10 went on, we got to see the origin story of Kevin Conroy… this was a part of the DC Pride 2022 book. EP 506 is where you can hear Ryan and I discuss this amazing story of a man that we all admire, and have admired for 30 years… Listen to EP 506 right HERE! In EP 507, Joe Reed and I got back into IDW’s TMNT series with TMNT Reborn V1, which can be heard HERE! I never thought I would have such a mixed bag of emotions reading comic books, but “DAMN” as 1990 movie Raph would say! Year 10’s celebration can be found in EP 511!!! I wanted it to be EP 510, but that didn’t work out. We also went back to the Transformers Marvel Years!!! Something I was dreading, because I never read the books as a kid, and everytime I see them… My first thought is the colors are so plain, bland, and boring….!!!! I mean they use roughly 5 or 6 colors in every issue.
Year 11 of TPB went from March 6, 2023 through March 6, 2024. In that year’s time we released 35 podcast episodes! In year 11 we basically stuck to the series we were enjoying. So it’s a broken record at this point, but Star Trek, Transformers, TMNT, and so many more! My favorite so far outside of TMNT is Radiant Black. You can get all the new and old episodes right HERE! Joe Reed grabs that co-host chair in the corner, and he jumps right in with me on that series!
Also In Year 11 we had the 540th episode of The Pull Bag. Inside this episode we explored Jon M. Wilson’s journey of 1 YEAR, 1 THOUSAND Comics Read! You can listen to that HERE! Jon will be back at the end of 2024 to discuss this year’s goal! Year 11was just like heaven, if comic books actually had a heaven and/or hell… Year 11 was ginormous with amazing content! One last note about Year 11… I’ve been doing comics with Jesse Earley over at his website Another Comic Review! We started covering the Skybound Entertainment comics inside The Energon Universe! We look at the NEW series Void Rivals, Transformers, and the one shot character spotlights of several G.I. Joe characters. It is an awesome time to be an 80s cartoon and modern day comic book fan!
This is YEAR 12 of The Pull Bag! And we are gonna be going bonkers with releases!!! From EP 546 all the way through EP 700!! Year 12 runs from March 6, 2024 to March 6, 2025. One of the biggest things so far in Year 12 is EP 548: TMNT The Last Ronin! Joe Reed and I tackled this, and holy crap…. I never thought I would EVER appreciate the original TMNT comic style and all that jazz, but damn….. DAAAAAMNNNN!! I loved The Last Ronin! That podcast is just under or over 3 hours long. “LIFE WELL SPENT!!!!”
I don’t have everything from 551-700 planned just yet, but my INSANE ambition is to hit that 700th episode by December 31, 2024! Here’s a variety pack of a sneak peek into The Pull Bag’s future:
MAY 2024:
Ep 550: Radiant Black V4!
JULY 2024:
Ep 551: Radiant Pink!!!
Ep 552: DC Comics – Superman Unchained!!!!
Ep 553: Skybound Entertainment’s Void Rivals #8!!!!!
Ep 554: Batman Beyond Neo Gothic!
AUGUST 2024:
Ep 555: Skybound Entertainment’s Duke and Cobra Commander #4!
Ep 556: TMNT Reborn V5!
Ep 557: TMNT Reborn V6!
Ep 558: TMNT Reborn V7!
Ep 559: TMNT Reborn V8!
Well folks there ya have it. we are on The Road To 600 and 700 Episodes!
