Chronicles of StevePodcasting Steve "Megatron" 09.16.2024

As someone who has been deeply entrenched in the podcasting world for 18 years, I’ve seen the landscape evolve in many ways. One of the most disheartening trends I’ve observed is the shift in podcasting conventions from being a haven for independent creators to becoming corporate-driven events. I believe these conventions are a waste of time for independent podcasters.
Podcasting conventions used to be vibrant gatherings where indie podcasters could share ideas, learn from each other, and genuinely connect. However, these events have been increasingly dominated by large radio and broadcast companies over the years. The focus has shifted from fostering a community of creators to pushing corporate agendas and products.
Walk into any podcasting convention today, and you’ll be bombarded with booths and presentations from companies trying to sell you the latest “must-have” equipment, software, or service. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with selling products, the problem arises when these conventions become more about commerce than content. Independent podcasters, often operate on tight budgets and will find little value in these sales pitches.
The heart and soul of podcasting have always been the independent creators who bring unique perspectives and voices to the medium. Unfortunately, their needs and challenges are often overlooked at these conventions. Instead of sessions that address the specific hurdles indie podcasters face, we get generic talks that cater to the interests of larger, well-funded entities.
What was once a grassroots movement has been co-opted by corporate interests. These conventions now masquerade as inclusive events for all podcasters, but in reality, they serve the interests of a select few. The independent podcaster, who is the backbone of this industry, is left feeling like an outsider in a space that was supposed to be for them.
For independent podcasters, the real value lies in smaller, more focused meetups and online communities where genuine connections can be made, and practical advice can be shared. These spaces are where the true spirit of podcasting thrives, away from the glitz and glamour of corporate-driven conventions.
While podcasting conventions may offer some benefits, they have largely become a corporate shell that fails to address the needs of independent podcasters. It’s time for us to seek out and create alternative spaces where our voices can be heard, are budget-friendly and our unique challenges can be addressed.
