Are We Unleashing The Geek Anymore?

I’ve got a question that’s been bugging me: Are we still unleashing the geek in each other, or is something missing? Every day, I wonder if we’re drowning in so much news, rumors, and opinions that our geek culture feels watered down compared to a few years ago.

I spend hours sifting through social media, news sites, and digital media, trying to find the truly relevant topics for our geeky community. But sometimes, it feels like we’re all just rehashing the same content with slight variations. Everyone’s got a geek news podcast, a pop culture blog, or a review site, and they all cover the same stuff, just from different angles.

We’re in an era where news is constantly in our faces, whether it’s geek, pop culture, or… you name it. Despite this, we keep pushing forward, discussing these topics. But honestly, unless I find some enjoyment in the material, I just don’t have the energy to keep up with it all. It’s draining, and I wonder if you feel the same way.

What I miss are the debates, the fun conversations, and the lively comment sections that made everything exciting. I want to share my deep interest in geeky stuff and have great intellectual conversations. Sure, nostalgia is fun and brings back memories, but does it still resonate with others? Sometimes it does, but often it feels like we’re told to “let the past die,” as Kylo Ren said. Revivals often fall flat, and single-character series struggle without a strong supporting cast. Looking at you, Boba Fett.

I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed all the new Star Trek shows. Discovery…nope. Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Picard Season 3 were all great. Picard Season 3 being my favorite, and the revivals of Wolverine, Axel Foley, and Sonic, we’ve had a great year going into the films. But I digress.

So, while nostalgia and some content still resonate, at what level? We’ve all been through the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s left its mark. I find myself tuning out from dystopian or broken TV shows and movies. I want hope, fun, and clean programming to reset at the end of the day, not more darkness.

Every time I get feedback or have a geeky conversation, it revives my inner geek. So, how can we unleash the geek in YOU? What can we do better for each other? What doesn’t resonate with you anymore, and what new passions have you discovered? For me, it’s rewatching old content and following shows that spark creativity. Lego Masters is a big one for me.

That’s why I’ve gotten into kitbashing, painting, and customizing this past year. It’s a creative outlet away from social media and screens. It’s something quiet and relaxing to focus on.

As I wrap up this rant, I hope to inspire you to find what drives you. Find that spark, and if it doesn’t ignite, let it go and move on. There’s always something new to discover, and I hope I’ve given you something to think about.
