From The Desk of TFG1MikeStaff Blogs TFG1Mike 08.13.2025
Hello all and welcome to the continuing Daily Blog series from me TFG1Mike. This is TFG1MIKE 365!! And it The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. It’s Day 225 and today I want to feature BILLY JOEL!! I’ve been listening to the music of Billy Joel since I was a kid in the 80s! My mom introduced him to me, because she loved his music. At least that’s the way I remember it. The three albums Mom played the most from Mr. Joel were 1978’s 52nd Street, 1980’s Glass Houses, and 1983’s An Innocent Man. After that I was kinda in the singles era for Billy’s songs. I missed out on The Bridge and Storm Front albums, but I caught And So It Goes, and of course We Didn’t Start The Fire! After that though in 1993 was the River Of Dreams album, and there are at least 5 or 6 songs on there that I love. After that I kinda moved on….. Always would listen to my Billy Joel favorites, and they’ve always been in my Faves playlist, but until this week…. hadn’t really thought about what he had been up to as a musician.
I was doom scrolling Instagram a few days ago, and I found a clip of Bill Maher’s Club Random Podcast. This was from the below full episode with Billy Joel. I had to seek it out. First off I loved watching this interview, it was very interesting, fun, and almost a full stroll down memory lane. The whole time I was watching it, I was thinking about my Mom. Where the Maher podcast really hit me is when he asked Billy if he was ok, and then Billy talks about having Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus…. It stopped me DEAD in my tracks as I was watching, and my jaw hit the floor. Everything he said to Maher, is everything that I had…. how “normal” is HYDROCEPHALUS??? I know Tim Conway died from it on May 14th 2019… I remember I had just gotten outta the hospital from having my brain drain done…. that news also hit me like a ton of bricks. If you wanna know more about my Brain Journey you can go HERE, However I digress, after watching this episode of Club Random, I’ve added more to my Spotify now, where hopefully I can just listen to it.
After watching that episode of Bill Maher’s video podcast with Billy Joel, I had to seek out the HBO Max documentary! It is one of the best music docs I’ve ever seen.
The one thing that stuck with me as I was watching this is Mr. Joel saying that he feels so separate from “that Billy Joel” guy, and then he’ll go out on the street, or be at a venue, and someone will say hey Billy Joel, or hey Billy, or hey Mr. Joel… and he remembers hey I am that guy. The man is 75 years old or something like that, and this doc is in 2 parts on HBO Max, grand total watch time is just about 5 hours or a bit longer. The funny thing is that, as I was watching it…. I didn’t feel like 5 hours had passed. It’s a piece of media that feels like a painting is being painted in front of your very eyes.
They cover almost everything, although no real mention of We Are The World, at least as of this writing… I don’t remember any mention of it, no mention of the Mobin’ Out Broadway show, or the animated Disney film Oliver & Company. But they have interviews with all four of Joel’s wives, his daughter Alexa, and all the musicians he worked with, and so much more. If you are a music fan, if you’ve ever been a Billy Joel fan, you need to watch the Club Random podcast interview and the Billy Joel: And So It Goes documentary! Both brought me back to the past, while also making me think about the present day as well.
Join me tomorrow August 14, 2025 as I’ll be writing about something!!!!
