Remembering Robin Williams – 11 Years After His Passing!

Hello all and welcome back to TFG1Mike 365! When I started this in January of 2019, the idea was for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. Today I am remembering Robin Williams. He has been on my mind lately. You can find all the blogs over at FROM THE DESK OF TFG1Mike

Robin Williams was a treasure, and his time on this plane of existence was from when he was born July 21, 1951, to his death August 11, 2014. Robin Williams was always on, every time I saw him in interviews or on red carpet shows, he always was the ever present performer. I get it you are supposed to be on an act at some of those events, and there were times in interviews where Robin did get really real, and drop the act, but it always looked like to me that he never had a chance to turn off the entertainer that he was. Now I never met the man, but through all his acting roles that I love, I feel like I got to know him through the characters he played in fiction. I have seen his standup stuff in the past, but Robin was always a character’s actor in my mind. When he died 11 years ago yesterday…. Steve Megatron, Doug Abel, and I recorded an episode of GeekCast Radio in remembrance of Mr. Robin Williams, I went back to it this morning right before I started writing this, and listened to it. We talk about how his roles, his personality, and his comedy in film each affected us, and so much more. You can listen to that right HERE, if you’d like to.

Here we are 11 years and a day later…. and I still miss Mr. Williams, but I don’t miss him as much, because of the legacy of characters that he left with us. From the Genie in Aladdin, to Mrs. Doubtfire, Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting, Andrew Martin in Bicentennial Man, Mr. Keating in Dead Poets Society, and so many more. Robin Williams will live on in our hearts forever! I keep running across the Instagram clip of Mr. Williams on Sesame Street with Elmo, I don’t ever remember seeing that episode as a kid….. but I love seeing it now. The funny thing is, doing research on that episode, I should have seen it as an 11 year old in 1991, as it aired March 15th that year.

So why did I write this today? I’ve been seeing a lot more clips of Robin Williams the last few days than I normally do. That’s most likely do to the anniversary of his death being yesterday, but it also stems from a few of his inspirational sayings over the years. He always (at least in the public eye), gave a positive outlook… Even though I’m sure whatever he was battling on the inside was eating him up. After all he was suffering from Lewy body dementia, and that had to be very scary for him. Reading about what he went through makes me think of everything I’ve been through in the last decade or so. It makes me reflect, it gives me inspiration to continue on, Robin Williams the consumate performer, actor, and laugh machine, made me laugh my entire life… And I thank him for that, always!

Join me tomorrow morning August 13, 2025 as I’ll be writing about something!

“Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” – Robin Williams!
