Top 100 Animated Series Nominees – 2000s: “The Era That Bridged Nostalgia and Innovation”

Top100 Ani Nom4

By the time the 2000s rolled around, life had shifted gears. I was out of high school, starting college, working, and realizing that free time was becoming a luxury. The world was changing fast — broadband internet, early streaming, message boards, and fandoms evolving into full-blown communities.

Animation was changing, too. The 2000s didn’t just update the look — it matured the storytelling. Suddenly, we had shows like Justice League, Transformers: Armada, and Dragon Ball Z Kai diving into emotion, continuity, and cinematic action that went way beyond “Saturday morning fun.”

When we talked about this era on GeekCast Radio, I admitted I missed a lot of these during their first runs. Between work and college, my TV time was limited — but when I did catch them, I was hooked. Justice League Unlimited was operating on a whole new level of storytelling, and Transformers: Armada felt like the franchise finding its modern pulse. Meanwhile, Dragon Ball Z was still that after-hours adrenaline shot that kept anime fandom alive in the West.

What stood out to me was how this decade balanced nostalgia with innovation. You could still feel the DNA of the ’80s and ’90s — that sense of wonder and heroism — but now with the polish of a generation raised on both hand-drawn grit and early digital flair. These creators grew up watching the classics we loved, and you could tell. They were evolving what they grew up on, making it sleeker without losing its soul.

The 2000s proved that animation doesn’t age — it adapts. It learned how to grow up with us, to mirror the chaos of adult life while still sparking that same sense of awe we felt as kids.
